| Malissa Jane Spence was the daughter of Alfred Spence and Elizabeth Jane Rayburn. She was born in Davis County, Iowa on March 13, 1862. Her mother died four days later. She had one older brother Jonathan Spence who was a teacher for many years in Nevada County, Missouri. |

| Malissa married Richard Harrison Fanning on January 27, 1881 in Newport, Missouri. They had four children: Alfred Norman Fanning (b. February 22, 1882), Walter Nathaniel (b. August 31, 1885), Maude (b. July 25, 1889) , Richard Harrison, Jr. (Harry) (b. April 11, 1892) and Marion (Mamie) (b.August 17, 1895). Malissa died August 18, 1899 at age 37, in Joplin, Missouri, leaving Richard with the four children ranging in age from 4 to 17. |
