Alfred Spence was born in Bath County, Kentucky on January 14, 1838.
He married Elizabeth Jane Rayburn who bore him two children, Jonathan and Malissa Jane. Elizabeth died on March 17, 1862, 4 days after giving birth to Malissa.
Alfred married again to Martha E. Moore. He and Martha had 7 more children, Louisa M., Milton, Thomas M., Alfred N., Martha Elen, Anna Agnes, and Maria Emma.
He joined the 3rd Iowa Cavalry as a private during the civil War. He was mustered out at Atlanta, GA. He later became an ordained minister.
He died on August 31, 1911 in Santa Cruz, California at the home of his daughter Louisa Amick. His second wife, Martha Moore was with him when he died and remained in Santa Cruz until her death on August 24, 1920.
