Belinda O'Leary and daughter Elizabeth (Sr. Mary Leo)

Belinda O'Leary was born in Ireland about 1819. She met and married Laurence Dempsey (born about 1814) in Ireland. Their children:

Patrick (b. 1844),
Maria (b 1845),
Catherine (b. 1847),
and James (b. 1849) were born in Ireland.

The family immigrated to New York between 1849 and 1852. Belinda (or "Bridget) and Laurence had eight more children in America:

John (b. 1852 in Illinois);
Thomas (b. 1853 in Illinois);
Sarah (Sr. Euphemia) (b.1854 in Illinois);
Elizabeth (Sr. Mary Leo) (b. 1856 in Missouri;
Michael (b. 1857 in Missouri;
Francis Xavier (b. 1858) in Kansas;
Alphonsus (b. 1859) in Kansas;
and Aloysius, (b. 1865) in Kansas.

Sons of Laurence Dempsey and Belinda O'Leary: Front Row Left to Right - Francis Xavier, Thomas, Alphonsus; Back Row Left to Right - Mike, Aloyisius (sic) (Name of son Patrick appears on the 1870 census of Leavenworth, Kansas, at age 15, but he was not with the family in 1880.

Information was gathered from the Leavenworth, Kansas Census of 1870 where Laurence (or Lawrence) was listed as "Larance Dempsy." Alphonsus apparently stayed on the farm in Kansas. On the census of 1910, Leavenworth, Kansas, he was living with his wife Mattie, 40 sons Clarence, 4, Lonzo E, 3, and Ambrose, 8 months. He was engaged in "general farming." At least three daughters of Laurence and Belinda became nuns.
